タバコを吸わない人が肺癌になる原因、トップはラドンガス！
June 27, 2017 – 7:29 pmNews Week英語版の5月12日号（NEWS WEEK 49 MAY 12 2017)に RADIOACTIVE HOME INVASION というタイトルで住宅のラドンが肺癌の原因になるという話題が取り上げられていた。
喫煙をのぞくと、肺癌の原因のトップはラドンガスだという。
随分前になるが、アメリカに在住している知人から屋内のラドン濃度を測定し、ラドン低減措置を講じるというビジネスがあり、自分のうちも検査をしたほうが良いのかどうかということで意見を求められたことがある。このときは、よく事情を呑み込めなかったが、News Weekのこの記事を読み、アメリカの動き、事情を知ることができた。
記事では、ラドン対策の予算がトランプ政権になったことで削減されるという話題にも触れていた。
ラドンガスとその健康被害対応部分について（仮訳してみた）：
記事のなかから、ラドンガスの健康影響について書かれている３つのパラグラフを抜き出し、翻訳（仮訳）してみた。
残念なことに、今回の作業で、30年前、翻訳学校に通っていたときに比べ、私の翻訳能力、著しく低下していることに気付くことになった。訓練、訓練。
以下、私の仮訳と原文を並べておいた。

Radon is a naturally occuring radioactive gas that is odorless, tasteless and invisible, and the only way to know it is in your home is to have a test done. A product of decaying uranium, radon gas permeates the soil, entering homes through cracks and holes in the foundation . It collects at higher concentrations indoors than outdoors, and levels can fluctuate depending on air flow in the home. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer (after smoking), and it kills approximately 23,000 American per year, many of whom are unknowingly poisoned in their homes.

科学者が、最初に、ラドンを肺癌と関連づけたのは、1940年代、50年代に、地下のウラン鉱でラドンに曝されていた採掘夫が高い頻度で肺癌で死亡していることに気付いたときでした。1980年代の半ばには、さらに研究が進み、住居内ににラドンが存在することが発見されました。ペンシルバニアで原子力発電所が建設段階にあったときです。発電所がまだ運転するのに至っていないのに、作業員は、定常的に、放射線アラームを鳴動させ、ラドンが驚くレベルにあるのを見いだしました。

Sicentists first linked radon to lung cancer when they noticed that underground uranium miners exposed to radon were dying of lung cancer at high rates in the 1940s and ’50s. In the mid-1980s, further research discovered the existence of radon in homes when a nuclear power plant was under construction in Pennsylvania. Before the plant was even operational, a worker consistently set off alarms for radiation, where they found sttagering levels of radon.

ラドンは放射性のアルファ粒子を生じます。ひとたびこれを吸入すると、肺組織中の細胞にダメージを与え、肺癌が引き起こされます。ケンタッキーの腫瘍内科医師の Dr. Chandler Parkによると、人々の大多数は修復酵素(enzymes)DNAのコピー二つを持っており、これにより、通常、ダメージを回復しますが、一部の人々にはコピーがひとつしかなく、癌細胞の発現を抑制するのに十分ではないことがあります。ラドンのレベルが高い家屋に4人の家族が住んでいても、家族全員が必ずしも同じリスクに直面しないのは、こうした理由から説明することができます。

Radon creates a radioactive alpha particle that, once inhaled, causes damage to the cells in lung tissue that can lead to lung cancer. According to Dr. Chandler Park, an oncologist in Kentycky, most people have two copies of DNA repair enzymes that would typically fix the damage, but some individuals have only only one copy, which is not sufficient to inhibit the manifestation of cancer cells. This would explain why a family of four living in a home with elevated radon levels might not all face the same risk.
